Caroline In The City, season 2, November-December 1997

My Bat Mitzva gift was a family trip to the US. Out of all the shimmering wonders, the biggest impression was caused by Macy’s gift wrapping floor. A whole space, grey walls and florescent lights, dedicated to the sole purpose of making things prettier by the simplest of means. OK, sure, ‘the simplest means’ might be a bit grand - naturally I was attracted by the glitziest bows out there. Yet the main principal remains intact. When I packed my things and prepared for the flight back, I took the longest time to figure out how to pack the delicate objects I bought on the wrapping floor - ribbons, papers, cards, confetti, tags and everything in between. Yes, they were originally created for packing objects, yet somehow, magically, emerged into an independent existence all on their own.
